LION DANCE CLASS
Fridays
Class (Orange Sash or Higher): 6:00PM - 7:30PM
ABOUT
The traditional southern style Lion Dance has become an extension of Chinese martial art. The lion dance helps promote important skills in the student. The movements of the lion are based upon Hung Kuen stances; the lion’s expression and liveliness is a reflection of the students' agility & skill they mastered in Kung Fu. The length & quality of the performance is a testament to their stamina & strength. The ability to follow the drummer and the crew involves great teamwork skills.
INSTRUMENTS
The drum, cymbals, and gong are the heartbeat of Fut San Lion Dance, setting the rhythm and bringing the lion to life. The drum leads with powerful beats, the cymbals add sharp accents, and the gong ties everything together. Their loud, energetic sounds ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, making them essential to any celebration or event.
LIONS
The lion in Fut San Lion Dance is a symbol of good luck and prosperity, while also scaring off evil spirits. Its mirror on the forehead reflects negativity away, and its horn wards off misfortune. Those who touch the lion or are hit by the lettuce (choy ching – 菜青) receive extra luck, making the performance a powerful blessing for any event.
